Troyes, France

The city of Troyes is located in the Champagne region of France, approximately 180 km south-east of Paris. Once the ancient capital of this area, Troyes is renowned equally for its medieval architecture and its famous vineyards that produce the eponymous Champagne wine. The rich history dating back to the Gothic and Renaissance periods can still be felt today through the gorgeous colorful half-timbered houses,  mansions of the 16th century, narrow streets, courtyards and magnificent churches.

Troyes was also one of the French capital of the textile industry during the last century with up to 25,000 workers. The “factory shops” were born in Troyes in the 1960s, to sell off local manufacturers’ ends of lines. At first only open to factory staff, little by little they were opened to the general public. Nowadays, these factory shops (even if just a few manufacturers remain) have become a tourist attraction welcoming nearly 4 million visitors per year.
